Lottery League

One of my first memories of Cleveland was the 2010 Lottery League. I had just moved to Cleveland from Boston where I was a drummer in an indie rock band. I was new to the scene and curious to see what was happening. We attended “The Big Show” at the Beachland Ballroom and experienced the mayhem that is Lottery League. And I was hooked. Such a great concept to bring musicians together, inspire each other, collaborate and create new art. After the show, I was already looking forward to the next Lottery League. A few years later it’s back and I cannot wait. So make sure you don’t miss out on the greatest music event in Cleveland.

Here’s a message from The Council of Chiefs:

Part rock n’ roll circus, part game show, part city-wide art project, The Lottery League returns to Cleveland’s music scene in 2013. This year’s Lottery League begins with Draft Night, which takes place at the Beachland Ballroom and Tavern on Friday, February 1st, 2013. The grand finale of the 2013 Lottery League — known as The Big Show — will take place at the world-famous Agora on Saturday April 6th, 2013, and it will be FREE for all!

This third “season” of the Lottery League will feature over 100 area musicians, sorted into over 30 bands. An “Incompatibility List” insures that no two former musical collaborators, roommates, or lovers are placed in the same band. After Draft Night–during which the new bands are randomly picked out of a bingo hopper–the bands must write, rehearse, and record their new creations. All Lottery League bands then convene on the night of The Big Show and perform, one after another, for an entire night.

The Lottery League, started in 2008 as a mere “what if,” added a new dose of fun, camaraderie, and creative chaos into Cleveland’s already thriving music scene. Though many of 2008’s musicians returned to participate in 2010, the Council of Chiefs — the creators and organizers of the Lottery League — have invited even more Cleveland-area musicians than in previous years. These new Lottery League participants, drawn from a wide variety of genres and scenes throughout Northeast Ohio, will highlight this area’s diversity and creativity while allowing for never-heard-before musical creations that range from the weird, the wild, and the wonderful.

Hooray 2013 Cleveland Lottery League!
